Performance troubleshooting

Roam is an all-in-one platform with many features. Video conferencing is particularly resource-intensive, especially when using virtual background, blur, and face touch up.

Check the Hardware Requirements for Using Roam

If your computer is experiencing performance issues while running Roam, first confirm that your machine meets the hardware specifications.

Look for Other Apps Taking Significant Resources

Next, check whether other applications are consuming a large amount of system resources. If they are, consider closing them to allow more CPU and memory resources to be available for Roam.

macOS

Use Activity Monitor to view CPU and memory usage.

CPU percentages are shown per core, and modern machines often have 10 or more cores. Roam and other applications typically won’t be affected unless most cores are heavily utilized. At the bottom of the CPU tab, you can view the overall Idle percentage to assess total system load.

For memory, as long as Memory Pressure at the bottom remains green, you should be fine. If it’s not, check which processes are using the most memory and consider closing them to reduce pressure. If Chrome or Edge appear to be the main consumers, use each browser’s Task Manager to identify resource-intensive tabs.

Windows

Use Task Manager to view CPU and memory usage. In the Processes tab, you can see what each application is using, while in the Performance tab, you’ll get an overview of total system usage.

Under CPU, 0–40% usage is typically fine, 40–70% may cause issues during meetings, and anything higher is likely to be problematic.

In the Memory section of Performance, consistently high usage and large amounts of compressed memory (shown at the bottom) may indicate a performance bottleneck.

Adjust Performance Settings in Roam

Lastly, you can adjust the performance settings in Roam.

Go to Settings > Performance, where you can adjust how many video participants are displayed, video resolution, and whether animations or talking indicators appear on the map.

Switching to the Efficiency preset often resolves performance issues.

Turn Off Virtual Background, Blur, and Face Touch Up

Virtual Backgrounds, Blur, and Face Touch Up are resource-intensive features. Turning them off can significantly improve performance during meetings.

Report an Issue

If issues continue after trying these steps, please report an issue. Roam will automatically attach diagnostic information to help us troubleshoot.
