Recommended macOS version

While Roam supports many versions of macOS, extensive testing and user analytics have revealed bugs in certain macOS releases that cause screen sharing to fail at elevated rates. As a result, we recommend running Roam on macOS Tahoe 26.1 or later.

Technical Details

Apple introduced ScreenCaptureKit, a new framework for screen sharing, in early 2022 with macOS 12.3 Monterey. While this framework is more modern than the legacy methods previously used for screen sharing, it also has new bugs not found in prior methods that apps used to perform screen shares.

Apple began requiring apps to use ScreenCaptureKit starting in macOS 13 Ventura, and as a result, Roam began observing elevated screen-share failure rates beginning with that release. Although Roam has implemented multiple workarounds and mitigations, customers may still experience issues. Roam has made multiple technical bug reports to Apple to attempt to address this issues. However, these bugs persisted in macOS 14 Sonoma and macOS 15 Sequoia, but appear to be resolved beginning with macOS 26 Tahoe.

The following graph shows screen share error rates Roam customers encountered by macOS version. Based on this data, we recommend upgrading to macOS Tahoe 26.1 or later to avoid screen sharing issues.
