Roam Awarded Key Virtual Office Patent

Today, Roam announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued the company a patent titled “Virtual Office Management” - a system and method to generate and manage a virtual office environment.

“We are ecstatic that the USPTO has recognized and protected the novel inventions underlying the breakthrough Roam Virtual Office,” said Howard Lerman, Roam Founder and CEO.

“Roam’s !nvention philosophy is quite simple. Each day, we close our eyes and imagine a real office. We consider everything it was designed to do: the subtle interactions, the little nooks and spaces, the different kinds of rooms and machinery, the details, the social nuances, and the customs and ceremonies. We then endeavor to create their digital equivalents—giving remote companies as many of the advantages of a physical office as possible.”

The patent protects foundational Roam interactions, including an interactive office Map displaying people within individually selectable workspaces; moving between rooms by selecting them on the Map; automatically launching the appropriate communication experience upon entry; Knocking; contextual workspace modes and actions; and AI-generated meeting summaries and follow-up conversations.

The patent also describes many of the inventions that make Roam feel like a real office inside a computer—including Meeting Rooms, Office Indicators, Shelves, the Theater, AInbox, and more.

U.S. Patent No. 12,732,591 B1 was issued on September 8, 2026. It names Howard Lerman, Tom Dixon, Sean MacIsaac, Kevin Caffrey, Jeffrey Grossman, and Klas Leino as inventors.
